THE LIBRARY AND THE CITY
The Library and The City is a proposal placed along Enterprize Park in Melbourne, Australia, epitomizing the principle of connection—both in its physical setting and in its architectural design. The project connects the site to its natural surroundings, the people who use the space, and the collection it houses. The final design separates the library's collection across 16 different floorplates, each with unique ceiling heights that tailor the auditory environment, providing users with a choice between social interaction and solitary study. The architectural form of the building draws direct inspiration from its riverside location; the edge of each floorplate is designed to resemble a riverbank, creating an effect in the building’s vertical section that suggests a river flowing through the structure.
